About Fox Theatre - Detroit

Detroit's Fox Theatre is located downtown on Woodward Avenue.  Due to the venue's renown and popularity, the surrounding area is often called "Foxtown."

The Fox Theatre seats 5,174.  It hosts world class performing artists and is the United States' top-grossing theatre of its size.

The venue opened in 1928 as a movie house and is now a National Historic Landmark.  The theatre was built by William Fox and designed by architect C. Howard Crane.

You'll find Fox Theatres in Atlanta, Brooklyn, St. Louis, and San Francisco.

The venue in St. Louis is very similar to Detroit's.

The plaster molds used to build the Motown version were reused to construct its counterpart in Missouri.

When it debuted, the Fox was the flagship theatre for the Fox Theatre chain.

None of the other Fox theatres, nor any surviving movie theatre from 1920s, is larger.

The Fox opened on Sept. 21, 1928 by showing the silent film, "Street Angel."

Since then, the Fox has hosted concerts by Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, and numerous Motown artists.

Other events held at the Fox include Sesame Street Live, Riverdance, the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony, and The Radio City Christmas Spectacular.

The theatre was featured prominently in a 2011 Super Bowl commercial staring Eminem.

The venue was very popular for the first four decades of its existence.

At one point in the 1940s, the Fox grossed $75,000 a week.

That's impressive when you consider tickets were 35 cents.

The Fox kept afloat in the 1970s by showing fringe and cult films.  The theatre was restored in the 1980s.

Its revival was further aided in the early years of the 21st century with the openings of Comerica Park and Ford Field.

The venue's marquee was erected in 1987 and based on the original.  Adorned with neon lights, and two large griffins, the marquee is one of the city's iconic images.

The Fox Theatre has three levels of seating: main floor, mezzanine, and gallery.  Attendees enter its storm lobby through one of 16 doors.

The theatre resides in a ten-story office building.  Interestingly, its near architectural doppelganger in St. Louis is in a stand-alone building.

You can find Fox Theatre center stage tickets, mezzanine seating, gallery seating, floor tickets, upper and lower level tickets, e-tickets or Fox Theatre - Detroit dinner suite tickets here.
