About Disney On Ice: Frozen

More Disney Frozen Resources

Frozen is a Disney on Ice show that debuted in 2014. It’s named after, and adopted from, the 2013 Disney movie of the same name. Most Disney on Ice shows are comprised of several scenes. Each of these scenes is dedicated to a different Disney movie or franchise with each starring different Disney characters.

Frozen, however, is more like a Broadway show minus the fact that it’s on ice. The overwhelming majority of the show is about retelling the story from the film. The only part that’s not Frozen-related is the introduction and conclusion, those scenes star Mickey and Minnie Mouse.

Producers of the ice show worked with makers of the film to ensure that the former lived up to the expectations created by the latter. The ice show uses the same songs as the film including the Academy Award winning “Let It Go.” The costumes were modeled after the characters in the film. A lot of effort and resources went into making Frozen the ice show as true to the movie as possible.

The ice show uses state of the art lighting techniques and stage craft. One of the most exciting effects is a blizzard. To achieve the arctic blast, 20 snow machines are used. The stage was designed to resemble a snowflake.

Frozen the ice show was directed by Patty Vincent and produced by Feld Entertainment. Since 1981, Feld Entertainment has been producing Disney’s ice shows. At any given time, the company has around half-a-dozen Disney on Ice productions touring the United States with several more on the road in other parts of the world. In 2013, the various Disney on Ice shows played to more than nine million people.

Adapting Frozen to the ice seems like a natural fit. The name alone lends itself to the D.O.I. treatment. The adaptation was done very quickly as the film was released in late 2013 and rehearsals for the ice show began in July of 2014. The ice show was produced quickly to capitalize on the immense success of the movie.

As millions of parents will tell you, kids love Frozen. A testament to its popularity came in 2014 when Disney’s CEO, Robert A. Iger, called “Frozen” one of the company’s top five franchises. That saying something especially when you consider just how many franchises Disney owns.
