About The Sporting Kansas City
Sporting Kansas City is a Major League Soccer (MLS) team. The franchise is based in Kansas City, Missouri but plays its home games at Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kansas.
Sporting Kansas City is a charter member of the MLS. They were founded by American sports legend Lamar Hunt (who also founded the Kansas City Chiefs).
For most of its existence, the club was known as the Kansas City Wiz and then as the Kansas City Wizards. Then, in 2012, the franchise was rebranded as “Sporting Kansas City.”
The club was following a trend of mimicking the naming traditions of European football clubs. There were, however, fans who objected to the name change as “sporting” was used by European organizations that fielded teams in multiple sports.
The team is also known as “Sporting KC,” “Sporting,” or by the initials “SKC.”
Sporting Kansas City‘s main supporters group is known as “The Cauldron” and they sit on the North side of Sporting Park.
Prominent players that have worn Sporting Kansas City colors over the years include Preki, Tony Meola, and Jimmy Conrad.
Sporting won the MLS Cup in 2000 and 2013. They were runners up in 2004.
