About The Seattle Sounders FC
Seattle Sounders FC (football club) are members of Major League Soccer (MLS). The team plays their home games in Seattle, Washington.
Their name pays homage to Puget Sound, an inlet of the Pacific Ocean.
The Sounders are one of the best draws in the MLS. They consistently attract more fans to their home stadium, CenturyLink Field, than any other team in the league and that includes the teams based in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Houston.
In 1994, the city was in the running for an original franchise. Then in 2003 it was a candidate for an expansion team.
Both times neither the city nor the league could make it happen.
Things finally worked out in 2007 thanks to an ownership group featuring Hollywood mogul Joe Roth, Seattle Seahawks owner Paul Allen, comedian Drew Carey, and Adrian Hanauer, owner of a previous team named the “Seattle Sounders” that played in the United Soccer League.
The Sounders compete annually for the Cascadia Cup with fellow MLS clubs the Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps FC.
The Sounders won the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup from 2009 through 2011 and then again in 2014.
