About The Washington Capitals Playoffs

The Washington Capitals dominated the 2009-2010 regular season.  They finished with 121 points becoming the first non-Original Six team to ever reach that mark.

They also scored 313 goals.  The most by any NHL team in more than a dozen seasons.

Despite all the regular season success, the Capitals faltered in the NHL’s postseason tournament.

Instead of skating away with a title, they limped home after blowing a 3-1 series lead to the Montreal Canadiens.  Worse yet, that elimination occurred in the playoff’s opening round.

The best showing the Caps have had in the NHL playoffs occurred in 1998.  That post-season ended with the Capitals reaching the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time in franchise history.

The 1998 playoffs began with the Capitals dispatching the Boston Bruins and then the Ottawa Senators.

Those two series victories set up a showdown with the Buffalo Sabres for the conference crown.  The Caps won the series in six games thanks to Jon Juneau’s thrilling overtime goal.

The dramatics of the conference finals would turn out to be the highlight of the Caps’ 1998 postseason.  They were unceremoniously swept by the Red Wings in the Stanley Cup Finals.

The Capitals play all their home post-season games at “The Phone Booth.”  The venue is officially known as the Verizon Center.

The arena is located in Washington D.C. and is also the home of the NBA’s Washington Wizards.
