About The St. Louis Blues Playoffs

The St. Louis Blues are a 1967 expansion team.  They were one of a half dozen teams added to “The Original Six.”

At the end of their first three seasons in the league, the Blues not only qualified for the postseason but they went all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals.

Sadly, all three championship showdowns gave St. Louis fans the blues.  St. Louis was swept by the Montreal Canadiens in 1968 and 1969 and by the Bruins in 1970.

Reaching three straight Stanley Cup Finals is very impressive but there was a caveat.  The NHL playoffs were redesigned to ensure that one “Original Six” and one expansion team made the finals.

In the decade after the Blues’ early playoff success, the team reached the post-season tournament seven times.  All but one of those appearances (1972) did the Blues avoid elimination in round one.

In 1972, the Blues were ousted from the playoffs in round two.

From 1980 through 2004, the Blues reached the Stanley Cup Playoffs every year.  That’s 25 seasons in a row.

A lockout canceled the 2005 playoffs, and in 2006, poor play canceled the Blues postseason hopes.

During their amazing playoff streak, the Blues won nary a conference crown or a NHL title.  In fact, since their three finals appearances in the late 1960s, the Blues have only reached the conference finals twice (1986 and 2001).

The Blues are the oldest NHL team that has never hoisted Lord Stanley’s cup.

The Saint Louis Blues play their home post-season games at the Scottrade Center.  The arena is found in downtown St. Louis, Missouri.
