About The Edmonton Oilers
The Edmonton Oilers entered the NHL in 1979 when four teams from World Hockey Association (WHA) merged with the NHL. Their acceptance into the league was the result of some clever dealing by team owner Peter Pocklington.
With the WHA now defunct, the league held a reclamation draft so NHL teams could get back the players they lost to the upstart league. The Oilers wouldn't have been able to protect a certain player by the name of Wayne Gretzky. Pocklington had signed "The Great One" to a 21-year personal services contract. Pocklington used this unique contract to not only have the NHL admit the Oilers into the league but to keep Gretzky on his team's roster.
Needless to say, Pocklington and the NHL did the right thing as Gretzky would go on to be the league's greatest player. When he retired from the game in 1999, Gretzky held over 60 NHL records. His number "99" has been retired by every NHL team. Undersized, Gretzky made up for it with an uncanny knowledge and feel for the game of hockey.
During his time with the Oilers he led them to four Stanley Cup Championships (1984, 1985, 1987, and 1988). While Gretzky was the team's best player, the Oilers of this era had several other great players: Mark Messier, Grant Fuhr, Paul Coffey, Glenn Anderson, and Jari Kurri.
