About The New Jersey Devils Playoffs

The New Jersey Devils and their playoff history can be divided into two eras—an era of playoff futility and an era of playoff success.  These two eras coincide with their location.

The Devils were founded in Kansas City (1974) and then moved to Denver (1976-1982) before settling in New Jersey (1982).

From 1974-1975 through 1986-1987—a period that encompass the franchise’s entire time in Kansas City and Denver as well as their first five years in the Garden State—the Devils qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs just once.

That lone postseason appearance ended abruptly as they were swept by the Philadelphia Flyers in a three-game series.

While their stint in New Jersey started with five straight years of not qualifying for the post-season, it went on to yield three Stanley Cup titles, five conference crowns, and numerous playoff victories.

The Devils won the NHL’s ultimate postseason tournament in 1995, 2000, and 2003.  They played in the Stanley Cup Finals in 2001 and 2012, but in those series they failed to stave off elimination.

From 1988 to 2012 (and disregarding 2005 when the post-season was canceled due to a lockout), the Devils reached the NHL playoffs 21 times.

That includes a stretch where they qualified for the NHL Playoffs in 13 consecutive seasons.

Oddly enough, the team’s showdown with the Los Angeles Kings in the 2012 Stanley Cup Finals followed and preceded seasons when the team failed to make the playoffs.

The Devils play all their home postseason games at the Prudential Center.  Also known as “The Rock,” the hockey venue is located in the central business district of Newark, New Jersey.
