About The Carolina Hurricanes Playoffs

The Carolina Hurricanes celebrated their first decade in Raleigh, North Carolina by missing the NHL playoffs.  That doesn’t mean their first decade in the southern United States was unproductive.

The Hurricanes won their division three times, qualified for the NHL postseason five times, reached the Stanley Cup Finals in 2002, and won the NHL crown in 2006.

The 2006 Stanley Cup Finals was a showdown between “The Canes” and the Edmonton Oilers, both former World Hockey Association clubs.

The Hurricanes and Oilers battle for hockey’s championship title despite having missed the post-season the previous year.  Both teams would go on to miss the Stanley Cup Playoffs in the following year too.

Needless to say, that doesn’t happen very often.

The franchise won the first ever World Hockey Association championship back in 1973.  The club joined the NHL prior to the 1979-1980 season as the Hartford Whalers.

The franchise qualified for the NHL’s post-season tournament in their first year but then experienced a five-year playoff drought.

The Whalers reached the playoffs every year from 1986 to 1992.  With the exception of 1986, the club suffered nothing but opening round eliminations.

The team suffered another lengthy playoff drought from 1993 to 1998.  The last year of that postseason famine came while the team was in Carolina.

The Hurricanes’ home ice is the PNC Arena.  The venue seats more than 18,000 for hockey games.
