As of 2020, the Vancouver Canucks have played in two Stanley Cup Finals. Both times, the Canucks reached the finals after an improbable playoff run. Both times, the Canucks played a team from New York. And both times, the Canucks lost.
After finishing the regular season three games below .500, the Canucks reached the 1982 Stanley Cup Finals only to be swept by the defending champion New York Islanders.
It was the first time the NHL Finals featured a team from each coast and the first time a team from Western Canada had competed for Lord Stanley's Cup in 56 years. During their 11-2 playoff run, Canucks fans started the tradition of waving white towels to support their team.
The Canucks Return to the Stanley Cup
The Canucks returned to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1994. This time they played the New York Rangers and stretched the series to a seventh and deciding game which they lost 3-2. Vancouver entered the playoffs as the seventh seed.
In the opening round series against the Calgary Flames, Canucks Geoff Courtnall, Trevor Linden, and Pavel Bure each had overtime game-winning goals and net minder Kirk McLean made what is now called "The Save" on Theoren Fleury and Robert Reichel in overtime of Game 7.
The Canucks then dispatched both the Dallas Stars and Toronto Maple Leafs in five games to reach their second Stanley Cup Finals. While they lost, there were still some Canuck heroics. In game one, McLean made 52 saves.
