About The Washington Capitals

The Washington Capitals entered the NHL in 1974 as an expansion team. In their first season, 1974-1975, the Caps posted one of the worst records of all-time, 8 wins, 67 losses, and 5 ties for 21 points. They finished with a winning percentage of .131, the worst in NHL history. The following season, the team went 25 consecutive games without a win. They finished that season with 32 points. The Capitals continued their losing ways though out the 1970's and early 1980's.

Things started to turn around for the Caps in 1982 after a trade brought Rod Langway, Brian Engblom, Doug Jarvis, and Craig Laughlin to the team. With the new blood, the 1982-1983 Caps reached the postseason for the first time in franchise history. Washington Capitals tickets were then sold to the postseason for the next 14 years. While the franchise was consistently reaching the Stanley Cup Playoffs they were also consistently losing. At one point the team failed to make it past the first or second round eight seasons in a row. The Caps finally broke through and reached the Stanley Cup Finals in 1998. However, after an exciting postseason run that featured six overtime victories, the Caps were no match for the Detroit Red Wings and were swept.

Capitals tickets are sold to the Verizon Center located in the Chinatown district of Washington, D.C. The team is aligned in the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference. The Washington Capitals schedule sees quite a few games against their Southeast Division foes, the Carolina Hurricanes, Florida Panthers, and Tampa Bay Lightning. Some of the all-time great Capitals include Dale Hunter, Mike Gartner, Yvon Labre, and Scott Stevens. Entering the 2010-2011 season, team is led by superstar, and two time Hart Memorial Trophy winner, Alexander Ovechkin.
