About The New York Rangers

The New York Rangers are aligned in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference. The team's main rivals are the New York Islanders. When the two teams clash, Big Apple hockey fans call it the "Battle of New York." The Rangers' other main rivals are the New Jersey Devils, Boston Bruins, and Philadelphia Flyers. New York Rangers tickets are sold to Madison Square Garden located in the New York borough of Manhattan. The Rangers joined the NHL in 1926 as an expansion franchise yet they are known as one of league's "Original Six." That's because the term "Original Six" doesn't refer to the league's beginnings but to the expansion of 1967. That's when six new teams entered the NHL to play alongside the league's six old teams, or the "Original Six."

The Rangers have won four Stanley Cups (1928, 1933, 1940, and 1994). They were the first United States franchise to win Lord Stanley's cup. The 1994 championship team featured coach Mike Keenan, captain Mark Messier, Adam Graves, Esa Tikkannen, Mike Rickter, and Brian Leetch. The team finished the regular season with the best record in the NHL and a franchise record 112 points. The Rangers breezed through the first two rounds of playoffs before being stretched to seven games in both the conference finals and the Stanley Cup Finals. Ultimately, Messier's leadership was the difference as the Rangers won their first Stanley Cup in 54 years.

In 1996, the Rangers acquired Wayne Gretzky who was nearing the end of his career. The highlight of "The Great One's" tenure in New York City, besides selling a lot of Rangers tickets, was a trip to the 1997 Eastern Conference Finals—it took just five games for the Rangers to fall to the Flyers. Other great Rangers include Eddie Giacomin, Rod Gilbert, Harry Howell, and Andy Bathgate.
