About The Nashville Predators

The Nashville Predators are an NHL expansion team that entered the league in 1998. The city was awarded a franchise in June of 1997 along with the Columbus Blue Jackets, Atlanta Thrashers, and Minnesota Wild. The Predators began play first because the city of Nashville had an arena ready to go (the Thrashers began play in 1999 while the Blue Jackets and Wild started 2000). The franchise had a logo before they had a nickname. The team unveiled the saber-toothed cat, or Smilodon, logo in September of 1997. The logo paid tribute to a Smilodon skeleton found in downtown Nashville in the early 1970s. The team conducted a fan vote to select a nickname and the winning submission was the "Predators."

The team's first regular season game took place on Oct. 10, 1998. The Predators lost 1-0 to the Florida Panthers at home. On Oct. 13, the Predators won their first game 3-2 over the Carolina Hurricanes. At the end of their first season, the Predators had notched 28 wins. The team continued to hover around the 28-win mark for the next five seasons. In 2004, the Predators qualified for postseason for the first time in club history but lost to the Detroit Red Wings in six games. The team would make the playoffs four out of the next five seasons but as of 2010 they have yet to win a playoff series. In 2006-2007, the Predators had their best season ever winning 51 games and accumulating 110 points.

Nashville Predators tickets are sold to the Bridgestone Arena located in the city's downtown area. The Predators are aligned in the Central Division of the Western Conference. The team is too new to have a representative in the Hockey Hall of Fame but some of the franchise's prominent players include David Legwand, Martin Erat, Greg Johnson, and Jason Arnott.
