About The Los Angeles Kings

The Los Angeles Kings were part of the 1967 NHL expansion. They entered the league with the California Seals (later merged with Minnesota North Stars), Minnesota North Stars (now the Dallas Stars), Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins, and St. Louis Blues. Kings tickets are sold to Staples Center located in downtown Los Angeles. The franchise is part of the Pacific Division of the Western Conference. Some of the team's prominent players over the years include Luc Robitaille, Marcel Dionne, Dave Taylor, Rogie Vachon, and Jari Kurri.

In August of 1988, the team made a huge trade with the Edmonton Oilers to bring the NHL's greatest player, Wayne Gretzky, to SoCal. The move devastated hockey fans in Canada as "The Great One" was a national treasure. However, Gretzky's run with the Kings increased hockey's popularity in Los Angeles, the state of California, and the United States. In Gretzky's first season in Los Angeles he won his ninth Hart Memorial Trophy (MVP) and led the Kings in scoring. In his second season, Gretzky became the league's all-time leading scorer. In 1993, Gretzky led the Kings to their first ever Stanley Cup Finals. Their opponents were the Montreal Canadiens.

The series turned in Game 2 when Canadiens head coach Jacques Demers asked officials to measure Kings defenseman Marty McSorley's stick blade. Sure enough, McSorley's stick was illegal and he was penalized. The Canadiens, were who trailing 2-1, pulled their goalie and scored the tying goal with a two-man advantage in the game's waning moments. The Kings never recovered. They lost the game in overtime and then the series (in five games). Gretzky left the Kings in 1996 and the franchise has been suffering ever since. From the 1993 Stanley Cup Finals to the start of the 2010-2011 season, the Kings have qualified for the postseason just five times and won just one playoff series.
