Sports fans in Buffalo, New York are no strangers to being on the wrong side of controversial calls. In football, the city was burned by both "Wide Right" and the "Music City Miracle."

No Goal

In hockey, the Buffalo Sabres were victims of one of the most controversial goals in NHL Stanley Cup history. In 1999, the Sabres reached their second Stanley Cup Finals. In Game 6, Dallas Stars winger Brett Hull scored a goal in the third overtime to clinch the game and the series.

However, Hull's skate was clearly in the crease and at that time it was illegal for an offensive player's skate to enter the crease before the puck. Nonetheless, the play was not reviewed.

By the time Sabres mentioned the infraction to the officials, post-game festivities had begun and it was too late to examine the goal.

The ordeal is now referred to as "No Goal" by Sabres ticket holders. The rule was changed the following year.

The Sabres' First Stanley Cup Visit

The Sabres first trip to the Stanley Cup Final occurred in 1975, just five years after they entered the NHL. They were defeated by the Flyers in six games. Buffalo Sabres tickets are sold to the First Niagara Center (formerly the HSBC Arena) located in the city's downtown area.

About the Name 'Sabres'

"Sabres" was selected as a nickname to avoid a cliche like the "Bison" and because the owner at the time felt a "sabre" was something a leader would carry.

The Sabres entered the league in 1970 alongside the Vancouver Canucks. The team is currently aligned in the Northeast Division of the Eastern Conference.

The French Connection

From 1972 until 1979, the Sabres had a prolific scoring line consisting of three great players, all of whom were French-Canadian: center and hall of famer Gilbert Perreault, left winger Rick Martin, and right winger Rene Robert.

The line was affectionately called "The French Connection" and all three had their number retired by the team. Other prominent Sabres include Pat LaFontaine, Danny Gare, and Dale Hawerchuk.
