About The Sacramento Kings Playoffs

The Sacramento Kings went to the playoffs during their first year in the league (1948-1949).  They won the NBA championship in just their third season (1951).

In the 1951 NBA Finals, the Kings franchise avoided elimination to defeat the New York Knicks in seven games.

The Kings were competitive throughout the mid-1950s and then again in the early to mid-1960s.

The franchise was not competitive from 1968 to 1978.  During those years, the Kings reached the NBA Playoffs just once (1975).

Another down period occurred for the Kings from 1982 through 1998.  During that era, the Kings reached the league’s post-season tournament just three times.

From 1999 to 2006, Kings qualified for the NBA Playoffs every season (eight straight appearances).  This period was not punctuated with a NBA Finals victory or even an NBA Finals appearance.

Instead, it gave fans the most controversial playoff game of all-time.

The 2001-2002 Kings appeared to be the best team in the NBA.  To reach the finals and earn the franchise’s second title they had to get past a showdown with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Correction, they had to get past a showdown with the Lakers and the referees.

Game 6 of the 2002 Conference Finals saw the Lakers take 27 free throws in the fourth quarter.  Call after call, many appearing to be phantom, went against the Kings.

The most egregious occurred when a King was hit in the nose by a Laker’s elbow and the King was called for a personal foul.

Many pundits, fans, and sportswriters questioned the playoff game’s integrity.  Some even believed it was fixed.

The Lakers won the shady game, 106-102, as well as Game 7 to end all hopes of the Kings winning their second NBA crown.

The Sacramento Kings play all of their postseason games at the Sleep Train Arena.   The venue holds more than 17,000 for basketball games.
