About The Houston Rockets Playoffs

"Don't ever underestimate the heart of a champion!"

Houston Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich utter those words after his team won their second consecutive NBA title.

Those two league crowns came in 1994 and 1995.

Both playoff runs were incredibly exciting.  Overall, four of the eight playoff series went to a final and deciding game (three were best-of-sevens, one was a best-of-five).

The Rockets defeated the New York Knicks in the 1994 NBA Finals.  The series went to seven games.

The following year, the Rockets qualified for the NBA’s postseason tournament as the sixth seed.  In the first two rounds of the playoffs, the Rockets won five games in which they faced elimination.

In the 1995 Western Conference Finals, the Rockets battled the San Antonio Spurs.  It took just six games for the Rockets to oust the Spurs from the post-season.

With that victory, the 1995 NBA Finals became a showdown between the old and young.

With veterans like Hakeem Olajuwon, Clyde Drexler, and Kenny Smith, Houston was the old.

With players like Shaquille O’Neal, Penny Hardaway, and Nick Anderson, the Orlando Magic was the young.

The old prevailed as the Rockets defeated the Magic 120-118 in overtime of Game 1.  They used the momentum from winning a close game, and the heart of a champion, to sweep the Magic.

The Houston Rockets play all of their home postseason games at the Toyota Center located in downtown Houston.   The Toyota Center seats 18,000.
