About The Charlotte Hornets
The original Charlotte Hornets relocated to New Orleans for the 2002-2003 season. The NBA still wanted a team in Charlotte so they promised the city an expansion franchise that would begin play in 2004. The winning ownership group for the Charlotte franchise was led by Black Entertainment Television founder Robert Johnson. Due to winning the bid, Johnson became the first prominent African American to own a professional sports team in the United States. A name-that-team contest was held and "Bobcats" was chosen as the winner. The nickname fit with the state's NFL team, the Carolina Panthers. Also, "Bob" served as a reference to the franchise's original owner, Robert "Bob" Johnson.
In 2014, the franchise changed its name to the "Hornets." The franchise also received all the history and records of the old Hornets franchise. This was the NBA's attempt to make the current Hornets team and the original Hornets team one continuous franchise.
In February of 2010, Johnson sold the team to NBA legend Michael Jordan. Prior to owning the team, Jordan had been a minority owner and head of basketball operations. The Jordan-ownership era started off well as the team qualified for the playoffs for the first time in franchise history the following season.
