About The Philadelphia 76ers

The Philadelphia 76ers is the professional basketball franchise out of Philadelphia, PA. The team is part of the Eastern Conference of the National Basketball Association (NBA). It got its start in 1946, when a man by the name of Danny Biasone bought a team called the Syracuse Nationals, based in Midwest. The team struggled initially before being bought by Irv Kosloff in 1963, moving the team to Philly shortly thereafter. They currently call the Wells Fargo Center their home.

The team name was derived from the year “1776,” which was when the Declaration of Independence was signed in Philadelphia. The 76ers nickname is the “Sixers.”

During the team’s initial jaunt in Philadelphia, it played at the Philadelphia Arena and the Civic Center-Convention Hall. This is the home team of basketball legend Wilt Chamberlain. The team has a history of both successful playoff runs and crushing defeats. One of the team’s most memorable seasons was the 1976-77 season when it was handed a trade from the New York Nets in the form of Julius Erving, another one of the greatest basketball players in NBA history.

Similar to other teams that have seen one player turn an entire franchise around, the 76ers found that player in bad boy Allen Iverson. Coming off of what fans call “The Dark Ages,” which was a long stretch of misfortune for the team, Iverson was able to breathe new life into the team. With new ownership in place, Iverson’s unstoppable skills on the court and a move into the CoreStates Center, the team finally seemed to be on the upswing in the mid 1990s.

Throughout the rest of the 90s and through much of the new millennium, the team has continued to have a wide berth of ebbs and flowers, with standout players over the years include Dike Mutombo, Chris Webber, Andre Miller, and Elton Brand.
