About The Golden State Warriors

On March 2, 1962 the Philadelphia Warriors, who would later go on to be the Golden State Warriors, played the New York Knicks in Hershey, Pennsylvania. The Warriors won the contest 169-147 in what was then a record for most combined points in an NBA game. That feat was overshadowed by perhaps the single greatest performance ever by an NBA player, Wilt Chamberlain scoring 100 points. "Wilt The Stilt" shot 36 for 63 from the field and went 28 for 32 from the charity stripe to amass his 100 points. Due to Chamberlain's scoring prowess the accomplishment was overlooked; however the game would eventually go down as Chamberlain's signature moment.

The Golden State Warriors were founded in 1946 in Philadelphia. They moved to San Francisco in 1962 and in 1971 changed their name to Golden State. The state of California's official nickname is "The Golden State." The Warriors won their first championship in their inaugural year in the Basketball Association of America which became the NBA in 1949. The team won NBA Championships in 1956 and again in 1975. As of 2010, the Warriors have won seven conference titles.

Warriors tickets are sold to the Oracle Arena located in Oakland, California. The Warriors are aligned in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference. The team's main rivals are the Los Angeles Lakers and Sacramento Kings. Besides Chamberlain, some of the all-time great Warriors include Rick Barry, Nate Thurmond, Al Attles, Tom Meschery, and Chris Mullin. In April of 2010, Warriors head coach Don Nelson surpassed Lenny Wilkens as the NBA's all-time winningest coach. Nelson is the second winningest coach in Warriors' franchise history after Attles.
