About The Houston Astros

For many years, the Houston Astros were known more for their uniforms than for their play on the field. In 1975, the team introduced uniforms featuring multishades of orange, red, and yellow. Players' numbers appeared on their backs and on their pant legs. Newspaper writers hated the uniforms but fans loved them and similar styles began to appear in little leagues and high schools. Sadly for Astros ticket holders, fashion was about the only way the team could make headlines. It took Houston 19 seasons to qualify for its first postseason. As of 2010, the Astros are the oldest, single-city franchise that has never won the World Series.

The Astros entered the major leagues in 1962 as the Houston Colt .45s. The name was changed three years later when they moved into the Astrodome. The Astros played in "The Eighth Wonder of the World" until 1999. The team now sells Houston Astros tickets to Minute Maid Park. Also known as "The Juice Box," the retractable-roofed stadium is located in downtown Houston, Texas. After struggling through the 1960s and 1970s, Houston finally reached the postseason in 1980 and 1981 but lost both times in five games. After another early out in the 1986 playoffs, the Astros qualified for the postseason six out of nine seasons beginning in 1997. While this run sounds impressive, the club failed to win a series four times, and only once competed in the World Series. After starting the season 15-30, the Astros rallied to reach the 2005 World Series. However, Houston was no match for a confident Chicago White Sox team who scored 19 runs in three games on route to a series sweep.

The Astros are aligned in the National League's Central Division with the Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, Milwaukee Brewers, Pittsburgh Pirates, and St. Louis Cardinals. Their main rivals are the Cards, Cubs, and thanks to interleague play, the Texas Rangers. Some of the all-time great Astros include Nolan Ryan, Jeff Bagwell, Craig Biggio, Jose Cruz, and Mike Scott.
