About Widespread Panic
Widespread Panic is one of America’s preeminent jam bands. They are right up there in popularity with Phish and Dave Mathews Band. Where they differ from those groups is they’re more into southern rock, like the Allman Brothers, than the psychedelic folk sound of the Grateful Dead. Bottom line, Widespread Panic is amazing live.
Widespread Panic formed in 1986. They released their first album in 1988. Ever since then, they’ve been collecting Widespread Panic tickets all over the world. They currently hold the mark for most sold-out shows at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado and the Phillips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. They also headlined two nights at the very first Bonnaroo Music festival.
The band never plays the same set list twice. They’re able to do this thanks to a laminated list of all the songs in their repertoire, multiple colored ink pens, and a roadie with a good memory. Widespread Panic picks songs for their upcoming set prior to taking the stage. During intermission, they’ll pick songs for the evening’s second set.
The band is also amenable to fans taping, trading, and distributing (albeit with limits) recordings of their concerts. You can’t sell the tapes, but if you want to give a copy to all of your friends the band says be our guests.
Allowing their shows to be taped and traded helped Widespread Panic achieve national notoriety.
Widespread Panic began in 1981 in the dorm rooms of the University of Georgia. That’s where John Bell and Michael House met. They hit it off and soon were playing music together.
In 1984, they were joined by bassist Dave Schools. For a drummer, they enlisted the talents of Todd Nance, a childhood friend of Houser’s.
Their first gig as “Widespread Panic” occurred on Feb. 6, 1986 at a charity event. Percussionist Domingo S. Ortiz joined the fray later that year.
In 1987, Widespread Panic began building their huge legion of fans thanks to $1 Monday night shows at a watering hole in Athens, Georgia.
Michael Houser died in August of 2002 from pancreatic cancer. He was 40. He was replaced by George McConnell. He has since been replaced by Jimmy Herring.
Widespread Panic went on hiatus in 2012 but returned the following year with a slew of tour dates in the Midwest and the South. These dates culminated with a New Year’s Eve show in Atlanta at Philips Arena. During the Widespread Panic tour of 2013, the band began streaming their concerts over the internet.
