Rob Thomas is the lead singer of the rock band, Matchbox 20, as well as a successful solo artist. He has had a string of hit singles, both with his band and through his solo efforts, including “Back 2 Good,” “Real World,” “Push,” and “Smooth.” The latter was a collaboration with rock legend Carlos Santana
and garnered Thomas three Grammy awards for co-writing and singings on the song.
Thomas was also honored by the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2004, receiving a Starlight Award, which recognizes the influence of young songwriters that have had a profound influence on the music industry.
Thomas was born in 1972 on a U.S. military base in Landstuhl, Germany. Bursting onto the music scene in 1996 with Matchbox 20, Thomas has seen incredible success both through his efforts with the band and his solo career. He released his debut solo record in 2005, entitled “…..Something to Be.” It quickly rose to No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart, which was the first time a male artist breaking from a rock group hit the top spot in Billboard history.
As he toured to promote his solo record, Thomas made appearances at Live 8 and the MTV Katrina Relief Concert. He also went out on the road with Jewel and Toby Lightman. Moreover, one of the songs from the “…..Something to Be” album was used in the Disney movie Meet The Robinsons.
Then, in 2007, Thomas reunited with his bandmates to release another Matchbox 20 album, “Exile on Mainstream. “ The two-disc set was a combination of new material and a line-up of the band’s greatest hits.
Thomas has had a string of disappointments in his personal life. His mother passed away before the release of “Exile on Mainstream” and his wife, Marisol, has an autoimmune disease and has had to endure a number of health problems in recent years.
