OneRepublic is one of the most important and significant bands of the second decade of the 21st century. They’re historic not so much because of a string of number one albums and hit singles. They’re essential because of the contributions made by their lead singer, Ryan Tedder.
Tedder has written and produced songs for a plethora of big name artists including Beyonce, Adele, Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Lopez, and One Direction. Tedder’s songwriting prowess and production skills have reshaped pop music. Those talents, along with his mesmerizing vocals, have propelled OneRepublic into one of the biggest bands in the world.

Of course, Tedder hasn’t done it alone. He’s been helped by lead guitarist Zach Filkins. The two met while attending Colorado Springs Christian High School in Colorado Springs, Colorado. They formed OneRepublic with guitarist Dave Brown and drummer Jerrod Bettis. After the release of their third album, Tedder, Filkins, and Brown are the only original members left.
Rounding out the quintet are drummer Eddie Fisher and bassist Brent Kutzle.
OneRepublic released their debut album, Dreaming Out Loud, in November of 2007. While fans loved it (the album peaked at number 14 in the United States) critics failed to get it. Rolling Stone magazine gave the opus two out of five stars. What’s odd about their low rating is the magazine named OneRepublic as one of their ten “Artists to Watch.”
Critics, and possibly even yourself, have an urge to label OneRepublic as the “American Coldplay.” After all, Chris Martin and Ryan Tedder are awesome front men and both bands are extremely popular.
Now, OneRepublic acknowledges the comparison and admits that the bands have similar influences. The biggest difference between the two is OneRepublic, mainly Ryan Tedder, is influenced by hip hop and r&b while Coldplay is not.
OneRepublic ended a three and half year hiatus by releasing their third studio album, Native, on March 22, 2013. The album debuted at number four on the Billboard 200. That April, OneRepublic launched “The Native Tour.” The concert trek stretched into 2014 and saw the band selling OneRepublic tickets in North America, Europe, Asia, and Oceania.
