About Hall and Oates

Little good has ever come from a gun fight, but if bullets hadn’t flown at a Philadelphia music venue back in the late sixties the world would have been deprived of one of the greatest duos in rock and roll history.

The year was 1967. The city was Philadelphia. Local music fans had gathered at the Adelphia Ballroom to enjoy a battle of the bands competition. Before a winner was crowned, two rival gangs decided to start shooting at one another. In the ensuing panic, the frontman of The Temptones and the frontman of The Masters ran into a service elevator.

As the two musicians waited for the melee to subside, they learned that they both liked the same type of music and were attending Temple University. Their musical partnership didn’t officially begin for another three years, but that frightening night in the City of Brotherly Love was the birth of Hall and Oates.

Daryl Hall and John Oates are members of the Rock and Roll and Songwriters Halls of Fame. Billboard magazine calls them the most successful duo of the rock era. Pioneering a brand of music called “rock and soul,” Hall & Oates are responsible for six number one singles and seven platinum albums.

As one of the biggest acts of the 1980s, the duo not only sold millions of albums, and thousands of Hall and Oates tickets, they also sang on “We Are The World,” performed at Live Aid, and saw their music videos played heavily on MTV.

Hall & Oates released their first album in 1972 and continued releasing albums into the 21st century. Their greatest period of success, however, came in the 1980s thanks to releases like Private Eyes (1981), H20 (1982), Big Bam Boom (1984), and Live At The Apollo (1985).
