About Gregg Allman

Gregg Allman is a legend.  He was the lead singer, keyboardist, and songwriter for the Allman Brothers Band.  He also put together a successful solo career.  That solo career started in earnest in 1973 with the release of his critically acclaimed album, Laid Back.

Allman is an iconic singer, a talented pianist, and an accomplished songwriter.  His brand of music is a blues-infused rock that has deep southern roots with hints of country and gospel.

Allman, as a member of the Allman Brothers Band, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995.  Rolling Stone magazine named him the 70th greatest singer of all time.

Was Gregg Allman In A Band Before The Allman Brothers?

Gregg Allman and his brother Duane Allman were always close but music brought them even closer.  The brothers’ first band was called Y Teens.  That was followed by The Misfits and then The Shufflers.

The Escorts, however, were the brothers’ first real foray into the music biz.  In fact, playing in this band caused Allman to miss his high school graduation ceremony.

The Allman Joys came next and they were a local success.  The band booked a lot of gigs and the experience was sort of a musical finishing school for Gregg.

When Was The Allman Brothers Band Formed?

In the late 1960s, after nearly quitting the music business, Gregg and Duane found themselves in Los Angeles leading the band The Hour Glass.  The brothers hated the experience and considered themselves to be sellouts.

Gregg stayed in Los Angeles to fulfill contractual obligations while Duane went back to Florida to do session work.  When Gregg finished recording for his old label, he reunited with his brother and formed the Allman Brothers Band.  The year was 1969.

When Did Gregg Allman Release “I’m No Angel?”

Allman released his first solo album in 1973 but his 1987 opus, I’m No Angel, is the pinnacle of his time away from the Allman Brothers Band.  The album’s title track peaked at number one on Billboard’s Album Rock Tracks.

When Did Gregg Allman’s Brother Die?

Tragedy has been a big part of Allman’s life.  His father was murdered and his brother, Duane, died in a motorcycle accident in October of 1971 just when the Allman Brothers Band were reaching their pinnacle.

A year and a month later, Berry Oakley, bassist for The Allman Brothers Band, died in motorcycle accident just three blocks from where Duane perished.

In 2007, Allman was diagnosed with Hepatitis C.  The following year, doctors found three tumors in his liver.  Allman has also suffered through lung surgery, atrial fibrillation, and substance abuse problems—his drug and alcohol use are the stuff of legend.
