One night, Nate Ruess, Andrew Dost, and Jack Antonoff were having dinner at a restaurant with a mutual friend. This friend asked the trio what their new band was going to be called. Several names were suggested before someone said “Ice Cream.”
No one liked “Ice Cream” but they liked what it inspired. Eventually, someone suggested “fun” and although it wasn’t immediately adopted the name stuck. The band often spells their name “fun.” to indicate that they mean “fun” the noun not “fun” the adjective. It’s also been suggested that the period helps fans Google their name. However, the band’s Web site, www.ournameisfun.com/ comes up first whether you add the period or not.
Aim and Ignite
Fun released their first album, Aim and Ignite, in 2009. It did not do well on the charts but it did garner some decent reviews. Then, in September of 2011, they released the single “We Are Young (featuring Janelle Monae).” It was the band’s second single from their sophomore release, Some Nights, and would go on to be one of the biggest songs of the year. Not only did it go to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 (for six weeks) but it was covered by the television show Glee and was featured in a Chevrolet commercial that aired during the Super Bowl.
“We Are Young” won the 2013 Grammy Award for Song of the Year. The single, as well as the rest of Some Nights, earned the band a Grammy Award for Best New Artist. Fun was also nominated in the categories of Album of the Year and Record of the Year. In doing so, .fun became the first band to be nominated in the four “open” Grammy categories of Album, Record, and Song of the Year as well as Best New Artist.
The nomination for Best New Artist is a little misleading. As we mentioned before the band had already released an album. Also, each member was in a band before they joined .fun. Ruess was in the Format. Dost was in Anathallo. And Antonoff was in Steel Train.
Since the release of their first album, .fun has toured extensively. They opened for Jack’s Mannequin, Paramore, and Panic! At the Disco. In July of 2013, fun. launched the “Most Nights Summer Tour” with supporting act Tegan and Sara. The band sold .fun tickets all over Canada and the United States due in large part to their excellent reputation as a live act. If you need proof look up their June 2012 appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.
