Excision is an electronic dance music producer and DJ. His real name is Jeff Abel and he hails from Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada.
Excision’s music is known as dubstep although his work is frequently placed in one of the genre’s subcategories called “brostep.”
Dubstep originated in South London in the 1990s. It owes its existence to technological advancements in electronic musical instruments as well as a number of styles including reggae, jazz, dub, broken beat, jungle, and drum and bass.
Basically, dubstep is a type of electronic dance music that focuses on big bass lines, sub-bass content, and syncopated drums patterns. Most dubstep music uses a tempo around 140 beats per minute.
As for the bass, a common practice amongst dubstep producers is to “wobble” the bass line. This is quite easy since the bass line is usually played on a synthesizer.
Accompaniment to the bass and drums is fairly sparse although producers may employ a riff. There are usually no vocals in dubstep. Samples, however, either vocal, sound effects, or other types are prevalent. The overall mood of dubstep is on the dark side, at least darker than most mainstream EDM.
“Brostep” is a fairly recent development, and in some circles, the term is viewed as a pejorative. Nonetheless, “brostep” is sort of the heavy metal of dubstep. The subgenre is quite aggressive, loud, and energetic. It includes riffs in the middle register as well as robotic and metal-esque sounds. As you might imagine, “Brostep’s” big sound lends itself perfectly for large concert venues.
In 2013, to perform his unique brand of dubstep, Excision unfurled a 250,000 watt sound system. For recent tours, Excision uses a 150,000 watt sound system as well as his patented “Executioner” video and light production elements. These state-of-the-art sound, light, and video systems have enabled the artist to sell Excision tickets all over the world.
Excision released his first album, X-Rated, in 2011. His sophomore effort, Codename X, dropped in February of 2015. He’s also released five EPs (as of 2014).
Since 2007, Excision has released an annual “Shambhala” mix album. These releases contained his own tracks as well as tracks from other artists including Jay-Z., Daft Punk, Skrillex, Tetusuo, Skream, Run DMT, and Bassnectar.
