About Coldplay

Coldplay’s debut studio album Parachutes, was released in 2000. Since then, the band has dominated the pop charts, record sales and paid music downloads.

All four of Coldplay’s studio albums have reached multi-platinum status in both the U.K. and the U.S. The band’s last two albums, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends and X&Y, debuted at number one in America. All the bands’ albums have reached number one in Britain.

2008’s Viva la Vida is the most paid-for downloaded album of all time. And thanks in-part to the success of that album, Coldplay won three 2009 Grammys: Best Rock Album, Song Of The Year and Best Pop Performance by a Duo/Group.

Coldplay had its beginnings in the fall of 1996 when singer Chris Martin and guitarist Johnny Buckland came together and formed band called Pectoralz. Within the next year they added bassist Guy Berryman and started playing gigs under the name Starfish.

Soon, Will Champion was added to the lineup as a percussionist. Although he knew how to play several instruments, Champion became the band’s drummer without knowing how to play the drums.

Coldplay would remain a foursome, but Martin asked fellow student Tim Rice-Oxley to join the band as a keyboardist. Rice-Oxley refused because he didn’t want to leave his current band, Keane, since they were picking up momentum.

With the lineup set, the band changed its name to Coldplay—a suggestion by a fellow student who had used the name for his band.

Coldplay signed with Parlophone in 1999 and in that same year released their third EP, The Blue Room. The recording sessions were marred by intense bickering and fighting. At one point, Martin kicked Champion out of the band.

Champion returned to the Coldplay after Martin begged him. The tumultuous ordeal led the band to take steps to ensure the situation would never happen again. The results turned Coldplay into a democracy, with all profits shared equally among the four members. The band also agreed to fire any member who used hard drugs.
