Avenged Sevenfold, sometimes written as A7X, is a heavy metal band. Well, at least in theory. They began life in 2007 with a strict metalcore sound but that has evolved over the years into a more heavy metal/hard rock resonance. The group has been charged with “not being metal enough” although they could care less about such accusations.
Over the years, Avenged Sevenfold have employed elements from a number of genres including Broadway show tunes, piano ballads, and country music. Vocally, they’ve gone from mainly screaming to mainly singing. Their recording career began in earnest in 2001 and since then they’ve been labeled, by one critic or another, emo, gothic rock, thrash metal, scream, and pop punk.

Avenged Sevenfold formed in 1999 in Huntington Beach, California. They released their first opus, Sounding the Seventh Trumpet, on July 24, 2001. It failed to chart. Their sophomore effort, Waking the Fallen (2003), did as well on the charts as its predecessor but it sold enough copies to eventually earn a Gold certification.
Tragedy struck the band on Dec. 28, 2009. Their original drummer, James ‘The Rev” Sullivan was found dead at his home. Six month later, officials ruled he died from a toxic combination of Oxycodone, Oxymorphone, Diazepam/Nordiazepam and ethanol.
After The Rev’s death the band nearly called it quits. Instead, they persevered and continued to make records and sell Avenged Sevenfold tickets. The band released Nightmare in 2010 and Hail to the King in 2013. Both peaked at number one on the Billboard 200.
