Notre Dame Fighting Irish is arguably college football’s most storied, successful, and greatest program. The Fighting Irish have won 13 national championships and seen seven of their players win the coveted Heisman Trophy.
The school has also produced the most consensus All-Americans, the most unanimous All-Americans, and the most drafted NFL players. All of Notre Dame’s home games are broadcasted on NBC. They are the only school to have such a deal with a major network. That is why, much to the chagrin of detractors, that Notre Dame is synonymous with college football.
The Fighting Irish represent the University of Notre Dame which is located in South Bend, Indiana. The team plays their home games at Notre Dame Stadium. The venue is located on the campus of the university and seats more than 80,000.
Jutting into the sky at one end of Notre Dame Stadium is the Hesburgh Library. On the side of this building is a mural affectionately known as “Touchdown Jesus.” The actual title of Millard Sheets’ work is “The Word of Life,” but since the Jesus in the painting has his arms raised like a referee signaling touchdown the mural picked up a football related nickname.
Several legendary coaches have walked the sidelines at Notre Dame. That includes Knute Rockne, Frank Leahy, Ara Parseghian, and Lou Holtz. Rockne claimed three national titles in the 1920s while Leahy captured four in the 1940s.
