About The Boston College Eagles
BC Eagles Matchups
It’s one of the most memorable plays in the history of college football as well as one of the most memorable plays in all of sports.
The play in question occurred on Nov. 23, 1984. The Boston College Eagles were trailing the defending national champions Miami Hurricanes 45-41 with 28 seconds left in the game. The Eagles had the ball at their own 20 yard line. Three quick passes later, Boston College found themselves at Miami’s 48 with time for just one more play.
B.C.’s quarterback, Doug Flutie, took the snap, scrambled around, and then threw the ball from his own 37-yard line all the way into the end zone to a waiting Gerard Phelan. He made the catch to score the game-winning touchdown.
Miami’s defensive backs didn’t think the diminutive Flutie could throw the ball that far and ignored Phelan’s route. Flutie stands five feet, nine inches tall.
The pass, now known as “Hail Flutie,” not only snatched victory from the clutches of defeat—and in the most dramatic of fashions—but the hero of the play, Doug Flutie, was universally admired and respected for being able to play major college football despite his minor-league size.
Flutie, who threw for 472 yards that day, is the first college quarterback to have eclipsed the 10,000 yard passing mark. He won the Heisman Trophy that year.
