About The Wake Forest Demon Deacons

The Wake Forest Demon Deacons are aligned in the Atlantic Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The program can trace its roots all the way back to 1888. Their home stadium is BB&T Field. The stadium resides in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and accommodates 31,500 fans.

BB&T is a financial services company that bought the stadium’s naming rights in 2007. From 1968 to 2007, the venue was called “Groves Stadium.” The southeast end zone is known as “Deacon Hill.”

Wake Forest is part of “Tobacco Road” along with Duke, North Carolina State, and North Carolina—all four reside in the state of North Carolina. Those three schools are also Wake Forest’s biggest rivals.

The Demon Deacons don’t have a winning tradition like other schools in the ACC. You can excuse them for struggling, especially during the second half of the 20th century. Wake Forest is the third smallest school in the NCAA’s Football Bowl Subdivision and the smallest school in a BCS conference.

The school played its first college football game in 1888. It defeated North Carolina 1-0. In 1937, Peahead Walker was hired as head coach. He stayed in Winston-Salem until 1950. During his tenure he posted a 77-51-6 record. He also coached the school to appearances in the first ever Gator Bowl (1946) and the Dixie Bowl (1949).

After Walker left the university, Wake Forrest struggled. A series of coaches came and went with most posting less-than respectable records. Paul Amen went 11-26-3. Billy Hildebrand left after going 7-33. Chuck Mills finished his 5-year stint with an 11-43-1 record. In eight seasons, Jim Caldwell won 26 games out of 99.

The Demon Deacon’s fortunes changed in 2001 with the hiring of head coach Jim Grobe. In 2006, Grobe led his team to its first ACC championship since 1970. Wake Forest was tapped to play in the Orange Bowl that year. They lost to Louisville. Despite the defeat, the Demon Deacons still finished the year ranked inside the top 20.

Grobe’s teams did win the Meineke Car Care Bowl in 2007 and the Eaglebank Bowl in 2008.

When Grobe left the university after the 2013 season he had 77 victories, tied for the most in the program’s history with Peahead Walker. p>
