About The Virginia Cavaliers

Virginia Cavaliers are members of the Coastal Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). The Cavaliers play their home games at Scott Stadium. The venue’s official name is Carl Smith Center, Home of David A. Harrison III Field at Scott Stadium. Scott Stadium is located in Charlottesville and was built in 1931.

The Cavaliers are clad in navy blue and orange. Their mascot is called “CavMan.” The program’s three main rivals are North Carolina, Virginia Tech, and Maryland.

The Virginia-North Carolina game has been dubbed “South’s Oldest Rivalry.” The two programs first battled in 1892 and they’ve played annually since 1919. In 1923, their game ended in a 0-0 tie.

From 2005 to 2013, Virginia and Maryland were so-called permanent rivals in the ACC. This rivalry was fueled by the fact that a lot of players from both teams come from the Washington D.C. area. “The Beltway Brawl” has cooled now that Maryland moved to the Big Ten.

The Virginia and Virginia Tech rivalry began in 1895 but it wasn’t a yearly fixture until 1970. The two teams compete for the Commonwealth Cup.

The Cavaliers have produced a number of notable NFL players including Tiki Barber, Ronde Barber, Patrick Kerney, Herman Moore, Chris Long, Heath Miller, Ahmad Brooks, and Matt Schuab.

While at Virginia, quarterback Matt Schuab set a plethora of school records including passing yards (7,502), touchdown passes (56), completion percentage (.670), and 300-yard games (8). He also set a program record for games played at quarterback (40). Schuab led the Cavs to two Continental Tire Bowl victories in 2002 and 2003.

In 2004, the Cavaliers started the season 5-0 earning a number six ranking, their highest since 1990. Then they fell to #7 Florida State and finished the season 8-4.

bIn 2007, the Cavaliers ruined the closing of the Orange Bowl. They routed the Miami Hurricanes in their last home game at that stadium, 48-0. Also during that season, the Cavaliers set a record for most wins by two or fewer points. They won five games close games.
