About The North Carolina Tar Heels

The North Carolina Tar Heels first hiked the ball in 1888 (although the term “hike” was still a few years away from being invented). They are the oldest college football team in either North or South Carolina. Due to this distinction, the Tar Heels are often referred to as “Carolina Football.” Over the years, Carolina Football has played in more than 1,300 games.

North Carolina also holds the distinction of being the first college team to use the forward pass. Their punter felt the rush, scrambled towards the sideline, and threw the ball to a teammate. The Tar Heel snatched the ball from the air and rumbled 70 yards for a touchdown. That’s all North Carolina needed to defeat the University of Georgia 6-0. The year was 1895.

North Carolina plays their home games at Kenan Memorial Stadium in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The stadium can accommodate 63,000 screaming Tar Heel fanatics. The stadium is surrounded by pine trees and is one of the most scenic football settings in nation.

The Tar Heels are members of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and aligned in the Coastal Division. Their rivals are the Duke Blue Devils, North Carolina State Wolfpack, and Wake Forest Demon Deacons. All four universities are located on what is commonly referred to as “Tobacco Road.” The Tar Heels also have a rival in the East Carolina Pirates.

Without a doubt, the school’s most famous football alumnus is Lawrence Taylor. The hall of famer played at UNC from 1978 to 1981. Other famous Tar Heels include Charlie Justice, Ken Willard, Jeff Saturday, Alge Crumpler, Willie Parker, Dre Bly, Hakeem Nicks, and Julius Peppers.

Mack Brown was the head coach of North Carolina from 1988 through 1997. He left the school to take the same job at Texas. Brown went 1-10 in his first two seasons at UNC but won ten games during each of his last two seasons. He’s tied with Bill Dooley for the second-most career wins (69) at North Carolina, only Dick Drum has more (72). Brown also guided the Tar Heels to six consecutive bowl appearances.

Brown’s greatest achievement at North Carolina isn’t his win-loss record or the number of bowl games he won. His greatest achievement is increasing the popularity of Carolina football and improving the program’s facilities. Before Brown, the basketball team far overshadowed the football team. During Brown’s tenure, the Tar Heels consistently played to sellout crowds and even set attendance records.
