About The Final Four

The goal of every team in the NCAA Tournament is to win the National Championship. But before they can do that, a team must reach the Final Four.

Reaching the “Final Four” is an accomplishment unto itself. It means you’re two wins away from a national title and you’ve won your region of the tournament. In other words, you’re one of the four best college basketball teams in the country.

The Final Four is actually the National Semifinals. It’s played on a Saturday and is followed by the National Championship Game which is played on a Monday. There was a third place game but that was discontinued after the 1981 season.

As of 2012, North Carolina has the most appearances in the Final Four with 18. UCLA is second with 17. Powerhouses Duke and Kentucky are next with 15 Final 4 appearances a piece. The only other school with ten or more Final Four appearances is Kansas.

In 1965, future U.S. Senator Bill Bradley established the record for most points scored in a single Final Four game. He notched 58 against Wichita State in the tournament’s third place game.

In 1979, #9 Penn reached the Final Four becoming the lowest seed in the pre-64 team era to reach the National Semifinals. Other high seeds that have reached the Final Four include #8 UCLA in 1980, #8 Villanova in 1985, and #8 Butler in 2011.

Butler is the only team in tournament history to reach back-to-back Final Fours (2010 and 2011) without being a number one or number two seed. Furthermore, 2011 was the last time the Final Four was sans a top seeded team.

The highest seeded team in that year’s Final Four was #3 Connecticut (eventual champions). Overall, the Final Four has been without a number one seed just three times (1980, 2006, and 2011).

Only once, 2008, did all four number one seeds reach the Final Four.
