About The Clemson Tigers

The Clemson Tigers are one of the Atlantic Coast Conference’s (ACC) most successful programs. The school is a founding member of the ACC. The program won its 18th conference title, and 14th ACC Conference title, in 2011. Since beginning play in 1896, the Tigers have compiled several undefeated seasons and produced nearly two-hundred All-Americans as well as half-a-dozen College Football Hall of Famers.

Clemson won its first national championship in 1981. They secured the top spot in the polls by defeating the Nebraska Cornhuskers 22-15 in the Orange Bowl. The coach of that team was Danny Ford. He was 33 at the time making him the youngest coach to ever win a college football national championship.

In 1982, the program was put on probation for two years for a plethora of recruiting violations. After the probation period ended, Clemson went on a roll winning three straight ACC titles (1986 through 1988).

In 1990, the program was again accused of a variety recruiting violations. This time the punishment didn’t involve a post-season or television ban but it did lead to the resignation of Danny Ford. He was replaced by Ken Hatfield.

Dabo Swinney took over as Clemson’s head coach in 2008. On Sept. 17, 2011, Clemson defeated the defending national champions, the #21 ranked Auburn Tigers. The victory snapped Auburn’s 17-game winning streak. Over the next two weeks, the Tigers defeated Florida State and Virginia Tech when both were ranked #11. Swinney’s Clemson Tigers became the first ACC team to defeat three nationally ranked teams in consecutive weeks.

The Tigers’ home is Memorial Stadium in Clemson, South Carolina. The venue seats 81,500 screaming fans. Memorial Stadium is also known as “Death Valley.” It received that nickname in 1948.

The Tigers main rivals are the South Carolina Gamecocks. Their annual game is the biggest sporting event in the state of South Carolina.
