The History of the NFL

The NFL started in 1920 with just eleven teams. As of 2011, there are 32 teams. The Chicago Bears and the Arizona Cardinals are the only two founding members of the NFL still left in the league. The Green Bay Packers joined in 1921, the New York Giants in 1925, and the Detroit Lions in 1930.

The Washington Redskins joined in 1932 followed by the Philadelphia Eagles in 1933. The St. Louis Rams entered the NFL in 1936 as the Cleveland Rams. They moved to St. Louis in 1995.

For decades, the college game sold more football tickets than the pro game. The NFL started to surpass college football after the thrilling 1958 NFL Championship Game. Televised on NBC, this epic overtime affair saw the Baltimore Colts, now the Indianapolis Colts, defeat the New York Giants, 23-17. It was the first ever sudden death overtime game in the NFL and it's widely regarded as "The Greatest Game Ever Played."

In 1960, tickets NFL weren't the only option for football fans. The upstart American Football League began to challenge the well-established NFL. After a few years of competing against one another the leagues realized it would be better if they joined forces.

A deal was worked out and the AFL merged with the NFL prior to the 1970 season. That year the NFL saw the addition of the Buffalo Bills, Cincinnati Bengals, Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, New York Jets, Oakland Raiders, Tennessee Titans, and San Diego Chargers.

Championship NFL Games

In 1967, following the 1966 season, the NFL and AFL played one another in a contest called the AFL-NFL World Championship Game. This year-ending title game would eventually be known as the Super Bowl. Since 1970, the Super Bowl has featured the champion of the National Football Conference (NFC) and the champion of the American Football Conference (AFC).

The "Big Game" has become a pseudo national holiday and Super Bowl tickets are the most in-demand sports ticket of the year.

Fortunately, you've found ClickitTicket. We are your hook up for the best Super Bowl tickets on the Web as well as NFL Playoff tickets and NFL Pro Bowl tickets.

Over the years the Super Bowl has been dominated by a handful of teams. Green Bay Packers won the first two Super Bowls which were held in the late 1960's. The Pittsburgh Steelers won four Super Bowls in the 1970's while the San Francisco 49'ers won four in the 1980's.

The Dallas Cowboys, also known as America's Team, won three Super Bowls in four years in the 1990's. The New England Patriots duplicated that feat in the early 2000's.

The Super Bowl has been unkind to some teams. The Minnesota Vikings, Buffalo Bills, and Denver Broncos each lost their first four trips to the "Big Game." The Bills' four Super Bowl defeats were in consecutive years.

The Baltimore Ravens and the Cleveland Browns have unique crisscrossing histories. The Ravens are actually the Browns franchise but when they relocated to Baltimore in 1996 the league insisted that they leave the team name, colors, and records behind. Therefore the league views the Ravens as an expansion team and the Browns, which re-entered the NFL in 1999, as the same franchise that was founded in 1946.

Other NFL expansion teams that entered the league after the merger include the Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, Carolina Panthers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Seattle Seahawks. The last two teams to join the NFL before the 1970 NFL-AFL merger were the Atlanta Falcons (1966) and the New Orleans Saints (1967).

As you can see the NFL has a long and storied history. Yet, to be a part of the world's greatest sport you're going to need NFL tickets. That's why you need to bookmark this site right away so you won't have to miss another game-winning touchdown pass, another all-out blitz on 3rd and long, or another jaw-dropping kickoff return.
