Updated 3/27/19 - To see how prevalent domestic abuse is in the NFL and to continue to raise awareness of this problem both inside and outside the NFL, we extracted from Brent Schrotenboer's database of arrests, charges, and citations (USA Today) all the NFL players who have been arrested for domestic violence since the year 2000.
It's staggering.
A little while back, Ray Rice became the intersection of domestic violence and the National Football League.
Sadly, he’s neither the first nor the last NFL player who’s been arrested for assaulting their wife or striking their girlfriend.
Rice is, however, the only one who had their crime caught on video.
If you thought the video of Rice punching his future spouse was unsettling just imagine if some of the following incidents had unfolded in front of a camera (and Roger Goodell was made to watch them all).
Our list contains 80 current and former NFL players who were arrested for domestic violence a combined 94 times. Inclusion meant you had been arrested for domestic violence after Jan. 1, 2000 at the same time you were on an NFL roster.
For a few players, they were about to become, or had recently been, employed by the National Football League. When possible, domestic violence arrests before or after a player’s NFL career have been mentioned.
Former players who were arrested for domestic violence ONLY after their playing days, or future players who were arrested for domestic violence ONLY before their tenure with the NFL, were excluded.
The team represented the most in our list is the Miami Dolphins. They have employed 14 players who had been, were, or went on to be, arrested for domestic violence.
That doesn’t mean 14 current Dolphins were arrested for domestic violence. It just means that since the turn of the century 14 players arrested for domestic violence also have a connection to the Dolphins franchise. Conversely, the Philadelphia Eagles are the only NFL team that has signed nary a player arrested for domestic violence in the 2000s.
Of the 94 domestic violence arrests referenced below, 30 ended with the charge, or the charges, being dropped. Thirteen have not been resolved or their resolution is unknown. The other 51 cases ended in some sort of verdict. Those verdicts sentenced perpetrators to a total of 49 days of incarceration (minus the time waiting to see a judge).
Of those 49 days in jail, 30 were deferred and the other 19 were served by one player (Michael Pittman). The arrests also resulted in more than 21 years of probation.
The cases that ended in a verdict generated $18,376.50 worth of fines or fees (that’s not including fines from the NFL, loss of game checks, and legal costs). In 2014, the minimum NFL salary is $420,000. If you break that down it comes to $26,250 a game. So the lowest paid NFL player can pay all of the domestic violence fines incurred by their comrades in the last 15 years with a single game check.
Two of the players on our list are currently serving what is tantamount to an indefinite suspension.

Other interesting statistics include: the remaining 78 players have been suspended for a combined 102 games.
Of those 102 games, just 24 were related to a domestic violence arrest. It should be noted that several players were cut shortly after being charge with DV.
Of the 80 men listed below, 62 are six-feet or taller and 16 weighed 300 or more pounds during their playing days. Twenty-six have been members of Super Bowl winning teams and 17 were drafted in the first round.
As for their victims, 13 had at least one child with their assailant and six were pregnant at the time of the abuse.
Only two victims are named because both were celebrities before their domestic violence incidents. All but one victim was the paramour, or former paramour, of their attacker. The lone exception is the mother of her attacker.
