About Le Reve

Le Reve is a fantasy-driven, water fantasy production brought to life by Franco Dragone, the former creative director for Cirque du Soleil. Played out in an aquatic setting, versus the traditional stage setting of most theatrical productions, Le Reve tells the story of an “everyman” type of character named Wayne.

Wayne has vivid fantasies of great personal accomplishments, but somehow always meets evil along the way. His dreams are guided by Morpheus, who is reminiscent of an ancient warrior, and the comical Four Angels. According to John Gilkey, who assisted Dragone in developing the characters for Le Reve, the Four Angels “enter the world and are fallible in every way.”

The intentions of the Four Angels is to guide Wayne along his journey, but end up falling prey to various forms of temptation along the way. The overall theme of La Reve is that men can do great things and accomplish major feats, but at the same time, engage in horrid acts of violence and ugliness, such as wars.

The score of the production is haunting and memorable, which further enforces the struggles of the good and evil that humans face regularly. The music consists of both live vocals and a recording of Serbian choral sounds.

The setting of the show is as much responsible for its success as the actual production itself. The theatre housing the show is round and every audience member is no more than 42 feet from the stage. There is no backstage area and no room in the wings for stage props. Instead, the show’s performers and the staging elements come from directly above or below the theatre.

The tank in the theatre holds one million gallons of water at a depth of 26 feet. The lights that reflect off the water are used to enhance the experience, going at once from calm and serene to menacing and scary, with special effects that can simulate fire, rain and snow.

Many critics and audience-goers say that Le Reve feels like a water version of Cirque du Soleil. However, Le Reve producers have strived to enforce an individual identity for the production to ensure that audience feel as though they have just shared an experience like no other.
