All you really need to know about Marvel Universe Live is your kids will love it. That’s especially true if your kids are of the boy variety. That’s not meant to perpetuate stereotypes. Just as Disney on Ice is full of stuff that has traditionally appealed to girls—princesses, ice skating, and extravagant dresses—Marvel Universe Live is full of stuff that’s traditionally embraced by boys—explosions, superheroes, explosions, fighting, explosions, motorcycles, and explosions. One reviewer said the only females he saw at Marvel Universe Live were moms with their boys and women chaperoning large youth groups.
It’s appropriate to compare Marvel Universe Live to Disney on Ice as both are produced by Feld Entertainment. That’s the same company that produces Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus. While Disney on Ice brings the company’s cavalcade of characters to the frozen water, Marvel Universe Live brings Marvel superheroes to an arena near you. In fact, the show contains more than 25 Marvel super heroes and villains including Spider-Man, Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America.
The arena show features motorcycle stunt riding, stage combat, and plenty of pyrotechnics. The plot is a little hard to follow but no one comes to Marvel Universe Live expecting a Shakespearean tale of human pain and suffering. They come to watch Hulk smash. By the way, the most impressive effect of the evening is Bruce Banner turning into the big green guy.
Parents should also be aware of the extreme merchandizing. Your kids will be bombarded with a myriad of Marvel souvenirs and concessions adorned with the likenesses of their favorite superheroes. If you add all the cool stuff you can buy for your kids—including a watch that interacts with the show— to the original cost of your Marvel Universe Live tickets you could fund the next Avengers movie.
Marvel Universe Live! may not completely win over adults but it will definitely entertain the little ones in your household.
