About the Lightning
The city of Tampa, Florida was awarded an NHL franchise in 1992. Despite the long odds, Hockey Hall of Famer Phil Esposito led a group of investors looking to bring hockey to the Tampa/St. Petersburg area through the bidding process. Many believed Esposito's group was going to lose, but momentum turned when he recruited a group of Japanese businessmen. Also part of Espsito's group, as a limited partner, was New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner. It also helped Esposito's efforts that his group was willing to pay a $50 million expansion fee while his rivals were only willing to pay $29 million.
The Lightning's inaugural season was 1992-1993. They won their first ever game thanks to four goals by a rather obscure player named Chris Kontos. Tampa finished their first season with 23 wins. The team made the playoffs for the first time in 1996 but failed to escape the first round. They would not return to the playoffs until 2003. However, that postseason they did win the franchise's first ever playoff series (the Lightning ousted the Washington Capitals in six games). The team won the Stanley Cup in 2004 defeating the Calgary Flames in an exciting seven game series. The championship team was led by the NHL's top scorer, Martin St. Louis.
The Lightning, or "Ning" or "Bolts" as they are sometimes called, are an Eastern Conference team aligned in Southeast Division. Their home ice is found at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa, Florida. Some of the team's better players over the years—guys that have really helped sell Florida Lightning tickets—include St. Louis, Vincent Lecavalier, Brad Richards, Vaclav Prospal, Dino Ciccarelli, and Denis Savard.
