About the Stanley Cup
The Stanley Cup is a trophy awarded annually to the team that wins the NHL playoffs. The trophy, which is handed out at the conclusion of Stanley Cup Finals, is widely regarded as the hardest to win in North American team sports. The NHL Stanley Cup is unique in that there's only one—most sports leagues make a new championship trophy every year—and the winning team keeps it until they're dethroned.
Another unusual feature of the Stanley Cup is that the names of the winning players, coaches, management, and staff are engraved on the cup. The original cup was donated in 1892 by Lord Stanley of Preston who at the time was the Governor General of Canada.
Stanley Cup winners date all the way back to 1893 when it was awarded to Montreal HC. From 1894 to 1914 the cup was not won via the Stanley Cup Playoffs but through "challenge games." During this period the cup changed hands if the holder lost their league title or if a team from another league issued a challenge and won. The Challenge Cup era was dominated by the Ottawa HC, Montreal Wanderers, and Winnipeg Victorias.
Starting in 1915, the National Hockey Association and the Pacific Coast Hockey Association competed for the Stanley Cup. Then in 1926, the cup became the unofficial trophy of the NHL. It became the official championship prize in 1947. Between 1915 and 2010, the cup has changed hands 94 times and has been won by 17 current and five defunct NHL teams. As of 2011, the Montreal Canadiens have sold Stanley Cup Finals tickets on 34 occasions and they've won the trophy a record 24 times.
The only other NHL teams with more than 20 Stanley Cup Finals appearances are the Detroit Red Wings and the Toronto Maple Leafs. They are also the only franchises besides the Canadiens that have won the Stanley Cup ten or more times.
The Stanley Cup goes by many nicknames including "The Cup," "Lord Stanley's Cup," "The Holy Grail," and "Lord Stanley's Mug." The last epithet is a tongue-and-cheek reference to the winning team drinking champagne out of the cup's silver bowl. After winning the Stanley Cup Finals, the championship team gets 100 days to spend with the trophy.
During this time the cup is put on parade, shown to sponsors, and given to each player for a day (a tradition started in 1994 by the New York Rangers). Regardless of where the cup goes it's always accompanied by someone from the Hockey Hall of Fame.
