About the Islanders
In every season from 1974-1975 to 1978-1979, the New York Islanders made the playoffs but failed to reach the Stanley Cup Finals. In 1978-1979, the Islanders finished the season with the most points in the regular season but lost in the semifinals to an inferior New York Rangers team. Many pundits believed New York Islanders hockey was incapable of winning the big series. Islanders coach Al Arbour decided to focus less on the regular season and more on getting his team ready for the playoffs. His plan worked. The Islanders won the next four Stanley Cups and reached a fifth. To put it another way, the Islanders won one more Stanley Cup in 11 seasons than the Rangers had won in 57.
During their historic run of four consecutive Stanley Cups, the Islanders won 19 straight playoff series, which as of 2010 is the longest streak of its kind in the history of North American sports. Their four straight Stanley Cups are even more impressive when one considers that to claim each championship they needed to win four series. Hitherto, the NHL playoff format required just three series wins. Seven men who were part of all four Stanley Cup Championship teams have been enshrined in the Hockey of Fame—Arbour, Mike Bossy, Clark Gillies, Denis Potvin, Billy Smith, Bill Torrey, and Bryan Trottier.
Islanders tickets are sold to the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum located in Uniondale, New York. The team is part of the Eastern Conference's Atlantic Division. The Islanders were founded in 1972 to block the rival World Hockey Association from using the Nassau Coliseum. While the franchise was hastily thrown together, they reached the postseason in just their third season. The Islanders' main rivals are the Rangers and New Jersey Devils. The Islanders and Rangers' rivalry is known as the "Battle of New York."
