About The New Jersey Devils
In 1990, the New Jersey Devils drafted goaltender Martin Brodeur with the 20th overall selection. It turned out to be a pretty good pick as Brodeur would go on to lead the Devils to three Stanley Cup Championships (as of 2010). In Brodeur's first 19 seasons with the Devils, he took them to the playoffs every year but one. Brodeur is also the NHL's all-time leader in regular season victories, shutouts, and games played. He's won four Vezina Trophies (best goaltender), five Jennings Trophies (allowed the fewest goals), and been selected to ten NHL All-Star games. He's also one of two NHL net minders that have scored a goal in both the regular season and the playoffs.
The Devils won their Stanley Cups in 1995, 2000, and 2003. They won the Eastern Conference Championship in 2001 but fell to the Colorado Avalanche in the Stanley Cup Finals in seven games. The franchise had struggled for years until Lou Lamoriello took over as president and general manager in 1987. Entering the 2010 season, the Devils under Lamoriello's leadership had qualified for the playoffs 20 out of 22 seasons. Since the NHL realignment of 1993, the Devils have won the Atlantic Division nine times. Also situated within the Atlantic are the Devils main rivals the New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers.
The Devils entered the NHL in 1974 as the Kansas City Scouts. After accumulating nearly $1 million in debt, the franchise relocated to Denver and were renamed the Colorado Rockies. The Rockies were never very competitive and had a rough time maintaining any semblance of stability. Prior to the 1982-1983 season, the team was sold and moved to New Jersey. A few months later, the franchise was renamed the "Devils" after the mythological Jersey Devil—a creature said to inhabit the Pine Barrens of southern New Jersey State. Devils tickets are sold to the Prudential Center located in downtown Newark, New Jersey.
