About The Dallas Stars

The Dallas Stars began their hockey existence in Minnesota. Back then the franchise was called the North Stars and they were part of the NHL's 1967 expansion. Initially, the "North Stars" were a success on and off the ice, but after a few seasons of losing hockey the franchise found itself in the red. In 1978, the North Stars avoided bankruptcy and relocation by merging with another failing NHL team, the Cleveland Barons. The merge was successful as the North Stars reached the 1981 Stanley Cup Finals. Unfortunately for their fans, the franchise went up against a powerhouse New York Islanders team. The North Stars were defeated in five games.

A decade later the North Stars returned to the Stanley Cup Finals only to lose to the Pittsburgh Penguins. In the series' sixth and deciding game, Mario Lemieux and the Pens defeated the North Stars, 8-0. The playoff run did little to increase attendance. Also, the team owner at the time, Norm Green, had become a despised figured in Minnesota. In 1993, he asked and received permission to relocate the team to Dallas, Texas. The franchise had already dropped the "North" from their nickname so once they arrived in the Lone Star state they were known as the Dallas Stars. They played their first regular season game in Texas on Oct. 5, 1993. They defeated the Detroit Red Wings, 6-4.

Despite reservations from some pundits, hockey was quite successful in Dallas. This was due to a strong team and American superstar Mike Modano. The Stars won the Stanley Cup in 1999 and centre Joe Nieuwendyk was named playoff MVP. Besides Modano and Nieuwendyk, other standout Stars include Neal Broten, Derian Hatcher, Brenden Morrow, Brett Hull, and Ed Belfour. Dallas Stars tickets are sold to the American Airlines Center located in the Victory Park neighborhood of downtown Dallas. The team is aligned in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference.
