About The Columbus Blue Jackets

Columbus Blue Jackets tickets are sold to Nationwide Arena. The $175 million, 18,550-seat, multi-purpose venue is located in Columbus, Ohio.

The Blue Jackets are part of the Western Conference's Central Division along with the Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, Nashville Predators, and St. Louis Blues.

As of 2010, the Blue Jackets have qualified for the postseason on one occasion (2009) and they were swept by the Red Wings. There are no players in Hockey Hall of Fame representing the Jackets, but then again, the team was founded in 2000.

The Blue Jackets History

The NHL had a team in Ohio in the 1970's. The Barons played in Cleveland from 1976-1978. The team eventually merged with the Minnesota North Stars which eventually became the Dallas Stars. Columbus began its bid for an expansion team in 1997.

It was almost thwarted when an arena referendum failed. The expansion bid was saved when Nationwide Insurance stepped forward and financed an arena. Blue Jackets hockey officially entered the NHL on June 25, 1997.

Nearly three years later, the team took part in the 2000 NHL Expansion draft. The Jackets first ever pick was goalie Rick Tabaracci, but he never played for the team. The Blue Jackets finished their first season with 28 wins.

How The Blue Jackets Got Their Name

The team's nickname honors the state's rich Civil War history. At the start of the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln asked Ohio to raise ten regiments.

The state responded by raising 23. In addition, several major figures from the Civil War were Ohioans: William Tecumseh Sherman, Ulysses S. Grant, and George Custer. In 2007, the franchise acquired a handmade replica of 1857 Napoleon cannon.

It's fired every time the Blue Jackets take the ice at the start of the game, score a goal, or notch a victory.
