About The Colorado Avalanche

Colorado Avalanche hockey actually began in Quebec City. The Quebec Nordiques were one of the original members of the World Hockey Association. In 1979, four WHA teams merged with the NHL. Nordiques were one of those teams along with the Edmonton Oilers, Hartford Whalers (Carolina Hurricanes), and Winnipeg Jets (Phoenix Coyotes). The Nordiques struggled on the ice and at the gate. At the time, Quebec City was the smallest market in the NHL. The franchise owner asked for help from the provincial government but received none. In May of 1995, the team was sold to a group of investors from Denver, Colorado. About five weeks after the franchise announced it was moving fans in Denver bought 12,000 season tickets.

Some of the franchise's greatest players include Joe Sakic, Peter Forsberg, Milan Hejduck, Peter Statsny, Adam Foote, and J.C. Tremblay's. However, the team's greatest goalie is Patrick Roy. "Saint Patrick" was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in 1984. He led them to two Stanley Cup Championships. In 1995, Roy grew disgruntled with the Canadiens after being left in the game in which he surrendered nine goals in 26 shots. Upset, Roy forced a trade. On Dec. 6, 1995, Roy joined an already solid Colorado Avalanche team. With Roy between the pipes, Colorado went on to win the 1996 Stanley Cup. In 2001, Roy and the Avalanche returned to the Stanley Cup Finals this time with 22-year veteran and fan favorite Ray Bourque. The Avalanche defeated the defending champion New Jersey Devils in seven games and Roy won his record third Conn Smythe trophy as the playoff MVP.
