About The Calgary Flames

Calgary Flames Home:
Scotiabank Saddledome
555 Saddledome Rise SE, Calgary, AB T2G 2W1, Canada

The Calgary Flames were founded in 1972 as the Atlanta Flames. The team was successful on the ice but not very successful at the gate.

In 1980, the team was sold for a then-record $16 million and moved to Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

The relocation created one of the NHL's best and fiercest rivalries between the Flames and another Alberta team, the Edmonton Oilers.

Edmonton is the provincial capital while Calgary is the province's biggest city.

The Flames' and the Stanely Cup

Calgary Flames tickets were sold to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time in 1986. However, the Flames were no match for the stacked Montreal Canadiens who won the series in five games.

The two teams met again in the 1989 Stanley Cup Finals. This time the Flames came out on top, capturing the cup in six games.

It was the first time the Canadiens were eliminated from the finals on their home ice.

Also that season, the Flames won their second consecutive President's Trophy (most points in the regular season) and the Flames' Al MacInnis won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP.

The Flames would return to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2004 only to lose to the Tampa Bay Lightning in a hard fought seven game series. The last four games of the series were decided by one goal—Game 5 went into overtime and Game 6 went into double overtime.

More Flames Information

Calgary is aligned in the Northwest Division of the Western Conference (along with their nemesis Edmonton).

Tickets to see the Calgary Flames are sold to the Scotiabank Saddledome, located on the east end of downtown Calgary on the Stampede Grounds.
