About the Arizona CardinalsHere's a bit of trivia that might win you a friendly bet with a fellow NFL fan. What is the oldest continuously run professional football franchise in America? The answer is the Arizona Cardinals. The team was founded in 1898 in Chicago as the Morgan Athletic Club. In 1920, they became the Chicago Cardinals. In 1960, they left the Windy City for St. Louis. In 1988, the franchise relocated to Phoenix, Arizona. They were called the Phoenix Cardinals from 1988 to 1993. In 1994, the team adopted their current name Arizona Cardinals. Due to the St. Louis Cardinals of Major League Baseball, the team is sometimes referred to as the "football Cardinals" or "Cardinals football." The team's other nicknames include "Big Red," "Gridbirds," "Cardiac Cards," "The Birds," and "The Cards." Arizona Cardinals football won its first undisputed NFL Championship in 1947. They were awarded the championship in 1925 but that title is still disputed. Fans with Cardinals tickets over the years have witnessed one of the NFL's least successful teams. As of 2011, "The Birds" have qualified for the postseason just six times. During their entire history they've won only six playoff games and three of those occurred in the 2008 season—the same season they went to Super Bowl XLIII.
